Paragon Roundness Measurement System

Paragon provides automated Circular Geometry Inspection for a wide range of demanding applications from factory floor to laboratory setting. Introduced in January 2001, Paragon provides state-of-the-art accuracy and features unavailable from any other product. Continual refinements ensure that each Paragon system uses the best technology available.

Advanced measurement features:
  • 4 measurement channels with expandability:
    • Measure reference datum surfaces simultaneously with related surfaces to get repeatable results in one pass.
    • Speeds the inspection process.
    • Avoids errors associated with measuring datum and related surfaces on separate passes.
    • Measure flat faces and circular diameters at the same time.
    • Expandable so you will never be stuck with too few channels.
  • Measure standard roundness, eccentricity, flatness, parallelism, and run-out. Optional measurements may be specified such as perpendicularity, surface texture, etc.
  • Industry leading signal conditioning. Anti-alias filters, 16-bit, simultaneous sampling with 1 A/D converter per channel, 2000x over-sampling, optical isolation, and precise DSP filtering for extreme attention to spectral purity and signal accuracy.
  • Large visual display for readability from across the room.
  • Client/server database connectivity with Oracle, or stand-alone local data storage.
  • Easy probe calibration with user defined reminder periods.
  • Easy configuration and storage of test setups.
  • Two levels of operator interface: 1) Administrator; and 2) Operator to manage changes in the test setups.
  • Automatic handling of interrupted surfaces such as slots and bolt holes.
  • Standard precision lever type gauge heads for flexibility in reaching difficult surfaces like inside diameters. Other types of gauge heads and transducers easily accomodated.
  • Precision air bearing or ball bearing reference tables in sizes to accommodate any application. Table diameters are available from 4" to 150" and load capacities from 10 lbs to 50,000 lbs.
  • Automated motor control and positioning.
  • Super stable granite bases for noise immunity.
  • Available precision down to +/- 5 micro inches.

Paragon Software Features

Paragon software is designed for production oriented environments with network reporting features. It works equally well in a standalone measurement station. (Click on images to enlarge.)

  • Operator log-in with password
  • Station identification
  • Test configuration setup
    • Define parameters for each channel
    • Type of surface (Datum Outside Diameter, Datum Inside Diameter, Outside Diameter, Inside Diameter, Datum Top Face, Datum Bottom Face, Top Face, and Bottom Face)
    • Specify whether the surface has interruptions. Paragon will automatically detect interruptions and replace them with a best fit so they do not affect the final results.
    • Filter specification. 15 UPR (undulations per revolution) and 50 UPR. Additional filters are available depending on requirements.
    • Specify measurement tolerances for each surface.
    • Support for oval diameters.
    • A part may be measured up-side down for convenience and the results will be reported as right-side up for consistency in measurement angles.
  • Attach a test configuration to a drawing number. The drawing number determines which part is to be measured. Paragon maintains a library of tests for your parts.
  • A Load screen loads a test configuration and allows the operator to enter a serial number for the part. If the serial number has already been tested, the operator may review the data from the previous run and may test the part again.
  • A Run screen performs the test on a part.
    • Real-time bar graphs of LVDT probe positions aid in part setup. The bars are very large to be visible across the room.
    • Jog button turns the table to aid in centering and leveling. The table may also be turned by hand.
    • Table position indicator with large numbers to be visible across the room.
    • A Start button actives the start of a test.
    • A progress bar indicates the status of the test.
  • A Results screen provides the measurements for each surface. It indicates whether any measurements exceed the tolerances. Results may be printed or saved to the data store -- a database or local disk storage.
  • A plot screen provides detailed analysis.
    • View raw data plot and filtered data plot.
    • Surfaces are drawn relative to their datum surface.
    • Zoom in and out with easy left and right mouse clicks.
    • The cursor shows continuous readout of position and angle.
    • High and low point markers allow quick identification of automated measurement points.
    • Center markers show the least-squares best fit centers of each surface.
  • Calibration is provided by a step-by-step graphical interface with visual pictures of the probe setup.

Rotary Reference Table and Mechanical Features

Tables are provided by Eimeldingen, the world's most respected name in rotary reference tables. Eimeldingen tables are used in many critical applications including NASA satellite inspection, GE gas turbine manufacturing, and jet engine construction.

Parts are easily mounted, centered, and leveled using finely adjustable stages. The exact mounting stage depends on the size and weight of the part. Standard stages are available. Custom stages are no problem, and can be tailored to fit specific parts. In many cases a purpose built stage can save a tremendous amount of setup time.

For most applications, bases are made out of granite for their rigidity and high mass to isolate the measurement station from environmental noise and vibration. Paragon has been installed in places where the measurement station sits in close proximity to heavy machines and forklift traffic. While a quite room is preferred, an isolated station can be designed for demanding locations.

A gauge stand is mounted to the granite base and provides a wide range of adjustment to locate the probes on the desired surfaces. A low-power laser line generator marks the exact location for probes to be positioned at the proper angular position.

Precision Gauge Heads and Signal Conditioning

When measuring fine tolerances down to micro inches, Paragon has careful attention to every aspect of the measurement path.

Uses standard Brown and Sharpe bidirectional gauge heads; other types of gauge heads and transducers easily accomodated. A lever style head is useful for reaching difficult inside diameter surfaces and it handles interrupted surfaces well. It features a slip clutch to protect the jewel like inner movement so that inadvertent drops or over-pressures, which are bound to happen, do no damage.

Signal conditioning is handled with the same level of jewel precision and tank toughness. No other known roundness measurement system uses this much care in ensuring signal quality in micro inch measurements.
  • Anti-alias filters. One of the hidden saboteurs of measurement systems is when unfiltered high frequency signals are sampled by an A/D converter and appear in the low frequency data. Once in the data they can't be filtered out. The solution is good quality analog filtering before the A/D converter.
  • 16-bit sampling with 1 A/D converter per channel. There is no possibility for noise or crosstalk sometimes introduced by a multiplexing system.
  • Simultaneous sampling to guarantee synchronization between channels.
  • 2000x over-sampling ensures the highest spectral purity, and allows final frequency response to be set entirely through software.
  • Optical isolation provides protection against potentially large voltage potentials and ground currents that exist in standard building wiring.
